Russo’s Rooster Awakening: Season 1 Episode 4 Recap

A New Chapter for the Rooster Crew

In the third episode of Rooster, viewers witnessed a whirlwind of events as Russo struggled to find his footing at Ludlow College. His first day was anything but smooth, with multiple missteps that had the staff discussing his shortcomings in an official meeting. Despite his errors, the chaos was entertaining, showcasing the humor and unpredictability that have become hallmarks of the show.

Meanwhile, Katie was navigating her own challenges after being suspended. She began to accept her situation and entrusted her teaching assistant with managing her classroom responsibilities. At the same time, she started to explore new opportunities, stepping out of her comfort zone. Archie, on the other hand, took it upon himself to assist Sunny in finding an advisor, albeit in the most unconventional ways possible.

Adding to the drama, Professor Dylan stepped in as the acting Dean after the original Dean suffered a heart attack and was hospitalized. With such a chaotic start to the season, fans are left wondering what more the characters could possibly endure in the upcoming episodes.

Russo Finds His Groove

Despite the initial struggles, Russo appears to be settling into his role as a teacher. His students seem to appreciate his approach, and he’s beginning to find his rhythm. However, his luck takes another turn when he accidentally trips in a student area. To cover up his mistake, he performs the Egyptian dance, which lands him in hot water. He is forced to apologize and sign an official document stating he won’t perform such moves on campus.

Crystal, who seems to have an unusual vibe, watches as Russo signs the document, listing the dance moves he can’t do. During this meeting, he also apologizes for the hockey game incident, which leads to a humorous mix-up involving Professor Dylan and Russo’s side of the apology. The confusion among the staff adds to the comedic tone of the episode.

Tommy and Russo’s Wild Night

Russo steps in to help Tommy, who used AI to write his assignment. However, his efforts are met with resistance from Walt, who refuses to let him intervene. Walt closes the library on a Friday night and insists that Russo attend his gathering, despite the latter’s reluctance. Russo arrives at Walt’s house only to make a disastrous first impression on Walt’s wife. He quickly grabs his coat and exits, only to run into Tommy, who is rolling a keg instead of working on his paper.

Tommy claims he has finished his assignment and invites Russo to join the party. As Russo walks away, he sees Tommy struggling with the keg and decides to help. After a night of beer pong and bonding, Russo admits he hasn’t been with anyone since his divorce. Meanwhile, Katie is trying to flirt with a bartender at the party, which her father missed.

Later, Russo is caught touching graffiti with Katie’s name on it. The cop, who seems overly vigilant, warns him that he’s being watched. After a bizarre exchange, Tommy and his friends return, chanting Russo’s name. Tommy then confesses that he lied about finishing his paper and now has inspiration from the night spent with Russo.

After a heartfelt conversation and some stylish additions, Tommy and Russo say their goodbyes. As Tommy writes about Rooster escaping his handcuffs, Russo breaks free from the bottles tapped to his hands and struts through campus. He returns to Walt’s house, where he apologizes, only to be met with indifference. Finally, he approaches Dylan and reveals his regret over walking away from their potential kiss, only to see her introduce him to another man. The episode ends with Russo spending the night with Crystal in Walt’s office.

Katie’s Night Out

Katie returns to her classroom with her teaching assistant by her side, ready to teach art history. Her honesty and engaging style win over her students, marking a strong comeback. However, her storyline takes an unexpected turn when Archie shows up at her house before the party at Walt’s.

Archie is clearly uncomfortable with the attention, and Katie enjoys watching him squirm. She admits she doesn’t know how she’ll manage without him, and they share a moment with their dog. Later, she runs into Archie at Walt’s, where he’s not happy to see her flirting with the bartender. Katie’s actions come right after she called out Archie for his “get a grip” story, showing her growth and confidence.

The next morning, Russo runs into Katie on campus, and both lie about where they’ve been. She returns home and gives Archie a coffee, only to find him already in her bed, ready for round two. To his surprise, she regrets sleeping with him and kicks him out.

Rooster airs weekly on HBO on Sundays at 10 PM ET/PT, with the finale set to release on May 10, 2026.
