Chesney the Kangaroo Escapes Petting Zoo, Scales Fence, Evades Capture for Three Days

A Kangaroo’s Unlikely Escape and the Community’s Response

In a small town in Wisconsin, an unexpected event turned into a local story of perseverance and community spirit. Chesney, a 16-month-old kangaroo at Sunshine Farm in Necedah, made headlines when he managed to escape from his enclosure, leading to a three-day search that captured the attention of residents and visitors alike.

Chesney’s escape was triggered by a sudden encounter with stray dogs that approached his enclosure. The commotion startled the young kangaroo, prompting him to leap over an eight-foot fence and vanish from sight. This unusual incident set off a chain of events that would involve the local community, technology, and a remarkable display of teamwork.

The Search Begins

Debbie Marland, Chesney’s keeper, described the initial panic as she and her friends embarked on a relentless search for the missing kangaroo. “I was putting on about 37,000 steps per day looking for him,” Marland said, emphasizing the physical and emotional toll of the search. The team scoured the area, following rumors of sightings and even using heat-seeking drones to track Chesney’s movements.

Colton Johnson, owner of Midwest Aerial Drone Services, played a key role in the search. His experience with heat-sensing drones for hunting and lost pets proved invaluable. However, tracking a kangaroo presented unique challenges. “It almost looked like a dinosaur running through the woods,” Johnson remarked, highlighting the distinct movement patterns of the animal.

The Challenges of the Search

Despite the efforts of the search team, Chesney remained elusive. He stayed within a three-mile radius of the farm but kept his pursuers guessing. On several occasions, the team caught up with him, only for the kangaroo to slip away again. One instance involved a daring jump into a cold river, which allowed him to evade capture temporarily.

The search continued for three days, with no sign of Chesney. On Friday, the team began to lose hope, fearing that the kangaroo had ventured further from the familiar surroundings of the farm. However, just when all seemed lost, Chesney was found nestled under a tree in a wooded area.

Reuniting with the Community

The moment of reunion was both emotional and triumphant. Brereton, who regularly helps out at the farm, took a calm and patient approach. “He had a very calm attitude when he walked up,” she said, describing how she stayed composed and let the kangaroo come to her. Chesney eventually approached, showing signs of trust and familiarity.

Brereton’s gentle handling paid off, as she was able to scoop up the 40-pound kangaroo. “I do believe he heard our comforting voices, he smelled the familiar smells of home and it just made him feel safe,” she said, expressing her relief and joy at reuniting with Chesney.

A New Chapter for the Kangaroo

Now back at the farm, Chesney is recovering from his adventure. Though hungry and tired, he is otherwise healthy and will soon receive a checkup from the veterinarian. His escapade has not only brought attention to the farm but also highlighted the importance of community support in such situations.

Marland expressed gratitude for the community’s involvement, noting that the effort to find Chesney was a true testament to their dedication. Additionally, a fan of the farm has written a children’s book about Chesney’s adventures, which Marland hopes to publish and sell to help cover some of the search costs.

Precautions for the Future

To prevent future incidents, Marland plans to install a new mesh top over the kangaroo enclosure. This measure aims to ensure that Chesney and other animals remain safe while still allowing them to enjoy their space.

Chesney’s story serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of wildlife and the importance of vigilance in managing enclosures. It also showcases the power of community collaboration in overcoming challenges and bringing a beloved animal back home.
